Residential vs Datacenter Proxies, Explained Simply

Shop for a Korean proxy and you'll immediately face a fork: datacenter proxies at pennies per IP, or residential proxies costing many times more per gigabyte. The price gap reflects a real difference — not in speed or features, but in what the receiving website believes about you.

Datacenter proxies

These run on servers in commercial hosting facilities. The IP addresses belong to hosting companies, and that ownership is public record: any website can look up an incoming IP and see "this is a cloud server, not a person's home." Datacenter IPs are fast, stable, cheap, and available in bulk — and every serious anti-bot system treats them with suspicion by default, because ordinary human visitors don't browse from server racks.

Good for: accessing sites with weak or no bot defenses, internal testing, latency-sensitive tasks, and any workload where being identified as automated traffic doesn't matter.

Residential proxies

These route your traffic through IP addresses assigned by consumer ISPs to real households — your request exits onto the internet from what looks like (and is) somebody's home connection in, say, Busan. To the destination site, you're indistinguishable from a regular Korean visitor. Providers assemble these networks by paying app developers to embed SDK-based traffic sharing, or through bandwidth-sharing apps whose users opt in — and the ethics vary enormously by provider, which is worth caring about.

Good for: anything facing real bot defenses — Korean e-commerce price monitoring, ad verification, sneaker/ticket-adjacent workflows, SEO rank checking on Naver, managing accounts that would be flagged from datacenter ranges.

Trade-offs: slower and less stable (you're riding someone's home internet), metered per-GB pricing that adds up fast, and rotating IPs by default — the address you hold can change mid-session unless you pay for "sticky" sessions.
